Costco Wholesale Corp. Reports September Sales Results
ISSAQUAH, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 5, 2000--Costco Wholesale Corporation ("Costco" or the "Company") (Nasdaq:COST) today reported net sales of $3.01 billion for the five weeks ended October 1, an increase of 11 percent from $2.70 billion in the same five-week period of the prior fiscal year. On a comparable warehouse basis, that is warehouses open at least a year, sales increased 7 percent.
The Company ended its fiscal year 2000 (a 53-week year) on September 3, 2000, with total sales of $31.62 billion, an increase of 17% from $26.98 billion during the 52 weeks of the prior fiscal year. Total and comparable sales increases on a like 53-week basis were 15% and 11%, respectively.
The Company plans to release its fourth quarter and fiscal year 2000 earnings results (for the 17 weeks and 53 weeks ended September 3, 2000) on October 12, 2000. Costco currently operates 316 warehouses, including 240 in the United States, 59 in Canada, 10 in the United Kingdom, three in Korea, three in Taiwan, and a warehouse in Japan. In addition, Costco operates 19 warehouses in Mexico with a joint venture partner. The Company also operates Costco Online, an electronic commerce web site, at www.costco.com. The Company plans to open an additional 18 to 19 warehouses (including the relocation of four existing warehouses to larger and better-located facilities) prior to the end of the calendar year.
